The skill is precision. The same precision a senior engineer brings to a design doc, applied to every prompt. It's the most underrated AI-native skill and the easiest one to evaluate in an interview.
They never trust LLM output blindly. Tests run. Output gets read. Weird outputs get questioned. They've been burned (hallucinated API import, wrong fixture, non-existent library function) and they tell the story.
When the model writes 80% of your code, the 20% you write becomes the verification scaffold. Tests, type discipline, structured-output validation, retry logic with sane fallbacks. Engineers who shipped fine without tests in 2020 cannot ship safely with AI assistance in 2026 because the volume of generated code drowns the human review capacity.
They build chains: one step's output feeds the next. They know when to add a verification step between two prompts versus when to merge them. They handle structured-output failures with retries, not panic. They build internal harnesses (eval suites, prompt diffs, version-pinning) when the work is non-trivial.
The signal: ask them how they'd build a feature that needs to call an LLM five times in sequence to produce a final result. An AI-native engineer talks about retry budgets, schema validation between steps, idempotency keys, observability. A non-AI-native engineer talks about "just chaining the prompts" and trusts it will work.
They know what to delegate fully (boilerplate, test generation, doc updates), what to delegate partially (review every change carefully), and what to never delegate (security-sensitive code, regulatory work, novel architecture, anything where a hallucination is unrecoverable).
These five aren't checkboxes. They compound. An engineer with all five doesn't just write more code; they write code that's verifiable, maintainable, and shippable. An engineer with none of them produces code that looks correct but breaks at the boundary.
The traditional interview filtered for skills AI now does in seconds. Whiteboard algorithms, FizzBuzz, reverse-a-binary-tree. Passing them no longer correlates with shipping production work. The questions that actually filter for AI-native fluency:
Question 1. Walk me through a recent feature you built using AI tools. What did you delegate to AI versus do yourself?
Strong answers cite specific tools (Cursor for scaffolding, Claude for debugging) and specific decisions (chose server components for the list view, client for the form). Weak answers hand-wave or describe AI as "helpful but I do most of it manually."
Question 2. If a founder gave you a vague spec like "build a Stripe-like dashboard," how would you approach it? Use specific tools and prompts.
Strong answers map the work to specific weeks, name the tools they'd use at each step, and describe how they'd verify the model's output. Weak answers stay abstract.
Question 3. What's a time AI gave you the wrong answer? How did you catch it?
This is the verification-habit filter. Engineers with real fluency answer with specifics in 30 seconds. Engineers without it hedge or describe a hypothetical.
