The 7 tools we actually evaluated

There are 30+ products that claim to do error tracking. Most are either full observability suites (Datadog, New Relic) or session-replay tools that bolted on stack traces (LogRocket, FullStory). For this post, we restrict the list to tools whose primary job is error tracking: capture an exception, group it, alert on regressions, link it to a release.

The seven we evaluated:

What error tracking actually has to do

Strip the marketing. An error tracker is competent when it does five things well:

  1. Capture and group. It catches uncaught exceptions in your app, fingerprints them, and dedupes the noise so 4,000 of the same null-pointer error become one issue with a count of 4,000.
  2. Resolve the stack trace. Source maps for JS, debug symbols for native mobile, line numbers for backend. If you can't see "this happened on line 412 of payments.ts after this user did this," it's not doing its job.
  3. Tag releases and detect regressions. When you ship v2.4.1 and something breaks, the tool tells you which deploy introduced it.
  4. Route alerts without burning out the on-call. Severity rules, fingerprint-based mute, regression detection, integration with Slack, PagerDuty, Linear.
  5. Stay quiet when nothing's wrong. Most tools fail this test once you cross 50,000 events per month. The dashboard becomes a wall of red.

A few notes on the math:

  • Sentry overage. Once you blow past your event quota, you pay roughly $0.00025 per error event. That's harmless for normal teams, lethal for teams with a runaway error loop. Set a spend cap.
  • Honeybadger's stop. Honeybadger processes up to 125% of your plan limit, then stops accepting events for the month. You won't get a $4,000 surprise bill; you'll get incomplete data. Pick your poison.
  • BugSnag pricing dance. SmartBear publishes Free and Select ($23/mo) but pushes most real customers to a custom Pro plan. Expect 15-30% off list with multi-year prepay.
  • Glitchtip hosted vs self-host. Hosted plans start at $15/mo. Self-hosted is free, but you pay for it in the form of an EC2 instance, a Postgres, and the time someone spends keeping it patched.

Where each tool actually breaks

Sentry

Sentry is the default for a reason. Best-funded SDKs, broadest language coverage, source maps that work, performance monitoring and replay bolted on for the teams that want them.

Where it breaks: per-event pricing during incidents. If a misconfigured cron drops 200,000 errors overnight, Sentry will happily charge you for 200,000 events. The fix is the spend cap and the rate-limited transports, but most teams don't set those until they get burned once. Sentry's also gotten heavy: the UI is now an APM-replay-error platform, not just an error tracker, and that bloats the dashboard if all you want is "what broke."

BugSnag (SmartBear Insight Hub)

BugSnag was the gold standard for native mobile crash reporting before Sentry caught up. It still has the cleanest mobile-stability dashboards we've seen. The crash-free-users metric is the right primary signal for a mobile team and BugSnag puts it front and center.

Where it breaks: BugSnag is now SmartBear, which means the buying motion at the upper tier looks like a 12-month enterprise contract with a sales call. If you're a 4-person mobile team that just wants to write a credit card and ship, the friction is real. The Free and Select plans are fine, but the moment your event volume crosses the Select tier, you're talking to a rep.

Rollbar

Rollbar's strength is server-side languages: Ruby, Python, Go, Java. The grouping is intelligent; the noise filters are good; the deploy tracking has been solid for a decade.

Where it breaks: list pricing. Rollbar's entry paid plan starts around $99/month for 25,000 events. Sentry charges $26/month for 50,000. For an apples-to-apples error tracker, the price gap is hard to defend unless you specifically prefer Rollbar's grouping or have a Rails-heavy backend where their SDK is more battle-tested than Sentry's.

Honeybadger

Honeybadger is what you pick when you've been burned by per-event pricing. $26/month, unlimited users, unlimited projects, processes up to 125% of your plan before it pauses. No ten-page plan comparison.

Where it breaks: ecosystem. Honeybadger has fewer integrations, fewer SDK contributors, and no full APM. If your team's debugging culture leans on traces, distributed tracing, or session replay, Honeybadger isn't going to feel complete. For the indie hacker shipping a Rails or Laravel app, that's a feature. For a 30-person fintech, it isn't.

Bugsink

Bugsink is a fresh self-hosted error tracker, not a Sentry fork. One Docker container. Starts on SQLite, scales to Postgres or MySQL when you want to. No Redis, no queue, no separate frontend. The whole product is "tell me when something broke and why," and it deliberately skips traces, RUM, and uptime checks.

Where it breaks: scope. If you want session replay or distributed tracing, Bugsink isn't the tool. The maintainer is one focused person, which means slow surprises and few surprises. Some teams love that. Some teams want a vendor.

Glitchtip

Glitchtip is open-source and Sentry-API compatible, which means you can switch by changing one URL in your SDK config. For teams already running self-hosted Sentry and tired of the operational tax, Glitchtip is the soft landing.

Where it breaks: feature parity. Sentry ships fast; Glitchtip lags. If your team uses Sentry's newer features (replay, profiling, AI suggestions), they're not coming to Glitchtip on the same timeline. For pure error tracking, that's fine. For everything else, it's a gap.

Highlight.io

Highlight.io was the open-source answer that bundled error tracking, session replay, and logs in one OSS-friendly package. LaunchDarkly acquired it in 2025 and announced the shutdown for February 28, 2026. If you're still on Highlight.io in May 2026, you've already migrated; if you're picking it for a new project, don't.

A simple rule: pick by stack first, team size second, billing philosophy third. The tool's SDK has to work cleanly on what you ship. Then check whether the team-size tier is realistic. Then ask whether per-event or flat-fee fits how you sleep at night.

How to set up error tracking without making it noise

The single biggest reason teams abandon their error tracker isn't price. It's noise. Here's the short version of how to keep the dashboard meaningful.

  1. Wire source maps from day one. Stack traces without source maps are useless. Every CI deploy should upload them.
  2. Tag every release. Sentry, Glitchtip, Bugsink all support release tags. Without them you can't tell whether a spike came from your last deploy or yesterday's.
  3. Route alerts to a channel, not a person, until volume is high enough. A #errors-prod Slack channel beats paging a human at 3am for the first six months.
