
After six months of running Cursor across three production codebases, the verdict is simple: keep it for daily writing, throttle it for review, and do not let it touch your migrations. It earns its $20 a month, but only if your team treats it like a fast junior engineer who needs supervision, not a senior one who can ship unsupervised.
This is the post we wish existed before we rolled Cursor out to a 9-person engineering team in late 2025. The other reviews online are mostly one-month single-developer takes, vendor-flavored feature checklists, or scorched-earth critiques. None of them tell you what actually happens at month four when the novelty wears off, code review starts groaning, and your CTO asks whether the $1,800 a year per seat is moving any real metric.
Here is what we found, with numbers.
Cursor is the best in-IDE AI editor we have used. Tab autocomplete and Cmd-K inline edit are genuine 10x features for the small, local edits that make up most of a working day. Agent mode and Composer are powerful but produce pull requests we cannot review safely, and we have largely turned them off on protected branches. Across our three repos, 62% of merged PRs are now partially AI-authored, but our review-rejection rate climbed from 6% to 11% over the same window. Time-to-merge for PRs under 200 lines dropped 28%; for PRs over 500 lines it did not move. Net: faster days, harder reviews, and one near-miss on a database migration we will get to below.
Cursor is a fork of VS Code with three AI surfaces glued tightly to the editor: Tab (predictive multi-line autocomplete), Cmd-K (inline edit-in-place), and the Composer / Agent panel (multi-file changes, terminal access, optional autonomous runs). It also ships Bugbot, an automated reviewer that opens PRs in response to natural-language bug descriptions.
What Cursor is not: a terminal agent (that is Claude Code's lane), a hosted coding agent (that is Devin, Codex, and friends), or a JetBrains replacement (it still cannot touch IntelliJ for Java/Spring backend work). It is an IDE first, and the AI is woven into that IDE rather than bolted on top.
Because it is a VS Code fork, every extension you already use mostly works, your keybindings come across in one click, and the muscle memory transfer is roughly zero. That alone made it a lower-risk rollout than asking the team to learn JetBrains AI Assistant or Zed.
Cursor's pricing shifted in mid-2025 from a fixed quota of fast requests to usage-based credits, and it stings if you were used to the old model.

The honest read after six months: Pro is enough for most engineers. Two of our nine engineers genuinely needed Pro+ because they lived in Composer; the others would have wasted the extra $40. Plan for one Pro+ seat per three Pros if your team uses agent mode regularly. Three features still get used every single day.
The single most valuable feature in the editor. Tab predicts the next 1 to 30 lines based on your recent edits and your codebase patterns, and it accepts on the Tab key. Compared to Copilot's autocomplete, Cursor's Tab is more aggressive about multi-line jumps and far better at "I am editing this same shape of thing again three lines down" follow-on edits. It is the reason we cannot easily go back to vanilla Copilot.
Highlight a function, hit Cmd-K, type "convert this to async + add retry with exponential backoff," ship in 30 seconds. This is the workflow Copilot Chat keeps trying to match and never quite does, because Cursor edits the buffer in place with a clean diff view, so accept-or-reject is one keystroke. Our usage logs show Cmd-K firing roughly 40 times per engineer per day.
Asking "@auth/middleware.ts how does this interact with @api/billing routes" and getting a real cross-file answer is, weirdly, still better in Cursor than in Copilot Workspace. The indexing is faster on small-to-medium repos, the citations are accurate, and the answers point at line numbers we can jump to.
These three features pulled time-to-merge for PRs under 200 lines down 28% in our data. That is a real number, sustained across six months, against a baseline measured the quarter before rollout.
Three features looked great in the demo and lost their place in the workflow after 60 days.
The agent will happily build out a "new feature scaffold" across 14 files. The problem is that no human can fairly review that PR. Our average AI-authored PR was 480 lines; most exceeded one reviewer's working memory. We capped agent mode at single-file scopes and pushed greenfield architecture work back to humans. Composer is genuinely strong at "rename this concept across 60 files and update the tests." The trouble is that it sometimes silently changes related logic too, and "rename" turns into "rewrite." We now do refactors with grep + sed for the mechanical parts and Cursor only for the judgment parts. Two engineers on the team are stricter and have abandoned Composer entirely.
Bugbot is a fun demo: describe a bug in plain English, get a PR. In practice, the PRs were too speculative for a main-branch reviewer to accept. We now run Bugbot only on a sandbox branch where its output is treated as a starting draft, never a finished change. Of the 47 Bugbot PRs we ran in the first three months, we merged 9.
Three real incidents, all from the second half of the six months.
The migration overwrite. An engineer ran Composer to "clean up the migrations folder." It dropped a working migration that had not yet shipped to production but was needed for a staging deploy. The change passed local tests because the test database was already in the post-migration state. We caught it in CI; we now block agent edits on migrations/ and prisma/ directories with a Cursor rule, and we do not trust those rules to always hold (see below).
.cursorignore did not always work. For a stretch of weeks in early 2026, files we had explicitly listed in .cursorignore still showed up in indexed context. For a team handling customer data, that is not acceptable, and it pushed us to flip every repo to Business-plan privacy mode. Indexing freezes on large monorepos. Our largest repo is around 720,000 lines. Cursor's initial index took 14 minutes and froze the editor twice. Performance has improved since, but on a repo of that size, vanilla VS Code is still snappier for raw editing.

Honest read: VS Code + Copilot is still the right answer for engineers who want stability over capability. Claude Code is rapidly eating Cursor's lunch on the agent side, because terminal-native agents produce smaller, more reviewable changes than IDE-native ones do. Most senior engineers we know in 2026 run both Cursor (for editing) and Claude Code (for autonomous work), which is more or less what we ended up doing.
If you are already on Cursor, the question is whether to stay, regress to Copilot, or move forward to Claude Code as your primary surface.
Back to VS Code + Copilot. Cheaper by $10 per seat per month, more stable on large repos, and your team will lose maybe 15% of the daily speed Cursor gives them. If your engineers are not power users, this is a fine downgrade.
Forward to Claude Code as primary. You give up the inline IDE experience but you get an agent that produces small, testable patches in a tight terminal loop. We now do most of our refactor and migration work in Claude Code and most of our writing-new-code work in Cursor. The combined bill is roughly $40 to $60 per seat depending on usage.
Stay on Cursor and discipline it. Cap agent scope. Block protected paths. Review AI-authored PRs with the same skepticism you would apply to a first-week junior. This is what we do.

Three things would make us recommend Cursor without caveats.
First, smaller agent PRs by default. The agent should bias toward the smallest reviewable change, not the most complete one. A "max 80 lines" toggle would change our adoption curve.
Second, real rule enforcement. .cursorignore and project rules need to be respected the way an enterprise security person, not a vibes person, would respect them. If a rule says "do not touch migrations," that should be a hard block.
Third, monorepo performance parity with VS Code. We should not have to think about repo size when choosing an editor.
If those three ship in 2026, this review changes from "supervise it like a junior" to "give it senior latitude on most work." Until then: cap the agent, keep the Tab.
